ST. CROIX, USVI

Commercial scale composting.

THE CHALLENGE

Toxic bauxite “red mud” from the old Alcoa plant was contaminating the island.

A $100M+ cleanup required a massive quantity of compost as a crucial element of an engineered capping system.

OUR ROLE

Execute the largest composting operation in the history of the USVI.

Strata One principals designed, implemented and operated a facility that processed green waste into 40,000 cubic yards of compost.

The material became the critical organic fraction of the capping system that remediated the red mud.

THE RESULT

Restored natural resources and safer groundwater for the island of St. Croix .c
